Finding the Right Fix-It Guy: Tips for Hiring a Handyman
Many homeowners agree that maintaining a house is a lot of work –rewarding but tiring. And that’s just the day-to-day upkeep like cleaning, mowing the lawn, and replacing light bulbs. It’s a different story altogether if you need something repaired and it’s just beyond your skillset. Luckily, you’re not really expected to do it all by yourself because you can always hire a handyman.
Of course you might be wary, perhaps having heard some horror stories from your neighbors or co-workers. Don’t worry. To help you find a reliable fix-it guy, here are some handy things to remember.
Work with someone who is highly recommended. Don’t just pick a name out of the phonebook. Instead, ask someone you trust for suggestions or check service reviews online. You’re not only looking for a person with the right skills, he or she also has to be trustworthy and professional since you’ll be letting them into your home.
Handymen aren’t made from one mold. This means that specializations may vary widely. Sure, there may be jacks-of-all-trades who can trim the hedges, fix your A/C, apply tile grout, and build a garden shed; but most handymen tend to focus on specific task sets. If you know what you need done, chances are there’s someone out there who can handle it for you.
Be specific about what you need done and be upfront about your expectations. Be absolutely certain about what needs repairing around the house. The repairman should also tell you right away if he can actually complete these tasks once he knows your expectations. Once you’re able to agree on these, avoid making any changes or additional requests midway as this may cause problems.
Have a contract drawn up and keep documentation. For your protection, the contract should include information like: the specific tasks requested; the work schedule containing the expected finish date and working hours; and the fees involved.
Ask for an estimate for how much labor, materials and equipment rental might cost. Keep in mind that inclement weather or illness might cause work disruptions so keep these events documented, along with any additional purchases of, or change in materials.
Find out if what sort of warranty your fix-it service offers. Work with someone who’s confident enough in his abilities and in the quality of his work to offer you a guarantee in writing. For instance, if the work doesn’t turn out the way you agreed (as stated in the contract you should have both signed), the handyman should make the necessary fixes at no extra charge.
Have someone be there when there’s work being done. For peace of mind, make sure you or someone you trust is at your home when the handyman is working. In fact, it’s best to stay involved in the process by asking questions and observing. While you’re not there to intrude on your contractor’s work, just be aware of what’s happening so that you know that you’re getting what you asked for.
We hope these give you ideas on how to find a professional handyman with the right solution for your home maintenance issues. It might not be an easy task but with your due diligence, you’re sure to find the right guy (or gal) for the job!
