5 Important Guidelines When Cleaning Your Air Conditioner

One of the things you need to remember when you have air-conditioning in your home is that regular cleaning is a must. This is to keep your AC from breaking down and to ensure that it will keep running in optimal condition.

It is advisable that your air-conditioning unit be cleaned at least once every six months. This cleaning schedule will not only enable your AC to operate at highest efficiency, but also save you money on repairs and energy bills.

Having your AC cleaned regularly will also help you prolong its lifespan, which saves you money since you won’t have to buy a replacement air-conditioner sooner than needed. You have to remember, however, that in cleaning your AC yourself, you might inadvertently damage it if you are not careful. To help you, here are some things you should keep in mind before staring your AC clean-up:

Turn off the power before starting – make sure your air-conditioning unit is unplugged before you even try to do any cleaning on it. Not only will keeping your unit plugged in endanger you and whoever is helping you with this task, but it also opens your unit up to the possibility of damage. If your AC is wired directly into your home, turn off your circuit breaker before beginning your cleaning regimen.

Clean the filters monthly – one of the parts that often gets the dirtiest in your AC is the filter, and cleaning this first will help you keep it running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. While it is recommended that air conditioner maintenance be done once every six months, filters need to be cleaned more often than that. These are rather easy to clean since these can be removed at any time from your unit. Simply remove, wash with clean running water, pat and air dry, then return to your AC. If you fail to do this regularly, you will end up with dust particles and dirt going to your evaporator coil, which can damage your unit over time.

Careful with the fins of your AC – this is often found on the backside of window-type air-conditioners and in the external unit of split-type ACs. Some people think that spraying these fins with pressurized jets of water from a pressure washer (the kind often used in a car wash) is the way to go when removing dirt from these. Strong water jets can actually damage the fins. What you need to use is a simple garden hose with a gentle spray setting to remove the dirt from these fins. For stubborn dirt, a soft toothbrush can be used.

Don’t forget the evaporator coil – some people forget to clean this part of the AC, while others are afraid to even try and touch this part of the unit. There is a good reason why some people don’t even consider going near these coils, and this is because any damage to this part of your air-conditioner can make your AC unusable. When cleaning the coil, special care is needed and special cleaners made for it is essential as well. You will also need to locate where it is and to cover it back up after cleaning.

Call a professional – one of the best things you can do is to actually leave the maintenance and cleaning of your AC to a professional. Not only will this ensure that you don’t inadvertently damage your unit with the cleaning process, but you will also leave all of the dirty work to those who are used to such a task. You will still need to clean your filters monthly though, but that is a walk in the park compared to the thorough bi-annual cleaning that your unit should go through.
